چکیده

The LEDA RFQ, a 350-MHz continuous wave (CW) radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ), successfully accelerated a 100-mA CW proton beam from 75 keV to 6.7 MeV. We have accumulated 111 hr of beam on time with at least 90 mA of CW output beam current. The 8-mlong RFQ accelerates a dc, 75–keV, ~106-mA H beam from the LEDA injector with ~94% transmission. When operating the RFQ at the RF power level for which it was designed, the peak electrical field on the vane tips is 33 MV/m. However, to maintain the high transmission quoted above with the CW beam, it was necessary to operate the RFQ with field levels ~10% higher than design. The RFQ dissipates 1.5 MW of RF power when operating with this field. Three klystrons provide the 2.2 MW of RF power required by the RFQ to accelerate the 100-mA beam. The beam power is 670 kW. Some of the challenges that were met in accelerating a 100-mA CW proton beam to 6.7 MeV, will be discussed.

Operations of the Leda Resonantly Coupled Rfq*

The LEDA RFQ is a 350-MHz continuous-wave (CW) radio-frequency quadrupole linac. LEDA is the low energy demonstration accelerator, a full power front-end prototype for the accelerator production of tritium (APT) linac. This machine has accelerated a 100-mA CW proton beam from 75 keV to 6.7 MeV. The 8-m-long RFQ accepts a dc, 75–keV, ~110-mA H beam from the LEDA injector, bunches the beam, and a...

Exact Computation with leda_real - Theory and geometric Applications

The number type leda real provides exact computation for a subset of real algebraic numbers: Every integer is a leda real, and leda reals are closed under the basic arithmetic operations +,−, ∗, / and k-th root operations. leda reals guarantee correct results in all comparison operations. The number type is available as part of the leda C++ software library of efficient data types and algorithm...

Leda – a High-power Test Bed of Innovation and Opportunity

The low-energy demonstration accelerator (LEDA) is an operational 6.7-MeV, 100-mA, cw proton accelerator consisting of an injector, radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ), and all associated integration equipment. Achieving this unprecedented level of performance (670kW of beam power) from an RFQ required a number of design innovations. We highlight a number of those more-significant technical advanc...

Design, Operation, and Test Results of 350 Mhz Leda Rf System

The Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) being constructed at Los Alamos National Laboratory will serve as the prototype for the low energy section of Acceleration Production of Tritium (APT) accelerator. The APT accelerator requires over 244 RF systems each with a continuous wave output power of 1 MW. The reliability and availability of these RF systems is critical to the successful ope...

Multiparadigm Extensions to Java

In 1995 my students and I developed Leda, a multiparadigm language based on the Pascal model. Leda allowed programmers to create abstractions in an object-oriented, functional, or logic programming style. More recently we have been interested in recreating this work, but this time using Java as the language basis. The objective to to add as few new operations as possible, and to make these oper...
